EBA Engineering Names Siddiqi President, Patel Exec VP

Rizwan Siddiqi, PE and Harish Patel, PE, RLS have been named President and First Executive Vice President, respectively, of EBA Engineering, Inc.  Siddiqi, who is currently Executive Vice President, will succeed Nanda Sen, PE, who has served as the company’s President since 1989. Similarly, Patel, currently Executive Vice President, will succeed Kunal Gangopadhyay, PE as First Executive Vice President.

“These moves are part of a comprehensive succession plan that ensures EBA will preserve its identity, and maintain its vision and mission going forward,” explains Sen. “Under the plan, the younger members of EBA’s leadership team will have the opportunity to assume greater management responsibilities, while assuring continuity and a seamless transition that will enable the company to continue to operate efficiently and successfully into the future.”

Vulcan Materials Co. the nation’s largest producer of construction aggregates, announced on Monday that the Company’s Board of Directors has named J. Thomas Hill (55) President and Chief Executive Officer and elected him to the Board of Directors. Hill, the Company’s former Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, succeeds Donald James (65), who will assume the role of Executive Chairman.

AECOM Acquires URS Corporation in $6B Deal

AECOM and URS Corporation today announced the execution of a definitive agreement under which AECOM will acquire all outstanding shares of URS for a combination of cash and stock valued at approximately US$4 billion or US$56.31 per URS share, based on the AECOM closing share price as of July 11, 2014.  Including the assumption of URS debt, the total enterprise value of the transaction is approximately US$6 billion.

VDOT Seeking Design Builders for Two Lynchburg Projects

VDOT is seeking firms interested in pursuing two design build projects located in the Lynchburg District.

Dave Thompson, PE to Serve as Regional Director for Michael Baker

On May 27 Timmons Group announced their recent acquisition of Baldwin & Gregg, strengthening Timmons Group’s position as one of the preeminent site design firms in the Hampton Roads market.  Baldwin & Gregg is a survey firm with a 106 year tradition of serving the Hampton Roads area. Included in the acquisition is the wholly-owned subsidiary Eastern Shore Surveyors. With this acquisition, Baldwin & Gregg’s existing clients will now have access to a greater range of professional services including civil engineering, environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, GIS/geospatial technology, and landscape architecture.

Timmons Group established an office in Hampton Roads in 2006 and currently provides civil engineering and technology solutions throughout the region.  The addition of Baldwin & Gregg will add a full complement of land surveying services to the local office, adding to the depth of expertise already available.

Dewberry is pleased to welcome Brian Hollinger, PE, as the manager of field engineering and construction services in the mid-Atlantic region. He is responsible for overseeing the firm’s construction engineering professionals and inspection staff assigned to a wide range of projects, including highly complex transportation and infrastructure design-bid-build and design-build projects in Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.  Hollinger has more than 22 years of construction and engineering experience related to concrete, civil, and heavy highway industries, both as an owner’s representative and a contractor. He most recently served as chief construction engineer for Bechtel Infrastructure in Reston, Virginia.  Hollinger earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Bucknell University.

New Mining Educational Video Available

In a recent effort driven by VTCA’s Aggregate Operations Committee, a great video about aggregates mining and the use of aggregates has been developed and is now available.

Only eight minutes in length, the video in DVD format was originally planned for use only at the 2013 Virginia Association of Science Teachers Conference. However, once completed by Rob Teague at Martin Marietta, it was felt that this video could be a great public relations tool for any number of opportunities including presentations to civic clubs, youth groups, school boards, boards of supervisors as well as other community and legislative outreaches.

Once again, our thanks to Rob Teague for a very professional job in making the mining video.

VDOT Seeks Design Builder for Rt 659 in Loudon

VDOT has issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to solicit Design-Build Statement of Qualifications from those entities interested in contracting to serve as the Design-Builder for the Route 659 (Belmont Ridge Road) – Reconstruct to 4-Lanes Project in Loudoun County, Virginia.  The Project is located in Loudoun County, Virginia, between Route 642 (Hay Road) and Route 2150 (Gloucester Parkway) and is approximately 1.9 miles in length.

The RFQ deadline is July 22, 2014 and a project information meeting will be held on June 9, 2014 at the Northern Virginia District Office of the Virginia Department of Transportation, 4975 Alliance Drive, Fairfax, VA 22030 in the Potomac Conference Center at 10:00 A.M.

HNTB Corporation has once again earned national recognition, receiving two 2014 Honor Awards from the American Council of Engineering Companies for two highly complex transportation projects - one for the design of the 495 Express Lanes in Northern Virginia and one for the tunnel portion of the Sound Transit’s University Link Light Rail Transit Project in Seattle.

Of particular interest in Virginia, HNTB and Fluor-Lane in 2002 developed and presented the Virginia Department of Transportation with an unsolicited public-private partnership proposal to improve “the Beltway” 495.  The design-build proposal recommended reconstructing eight general-purpose lanes and adding four express lanes along a 14-mile section of I-495 in northern Virginia. This heavily traveled 64-mile circumferential beltway passes through Northern Virginia’s environmentally sensitive and most economically vital areas and connects to three major interstate highways, limited access roadways and high capacity primary and secondary routes.
As the project’s lead designer, HNTB was charged with delivering designs for the four new express lanes and the complete reconstruction of the existing facility, including 57 new or replacement bridges, reconstruction of 12 interchanges, new or replacement sound walls, tolling technology and retaining wall structures. The design also had to coordinate with a new Metrorail Silver Line being built through part of the 495 Express Lanes project area and with other busy highways and arterials that repeatedly cross and connect with this section of I-495.

Benefiting from fast-track design and coordinated efforts between VDOT, Fluor-Lane and HNTB, the 495 Express Lanes opened in November 2012, a month ahead of schedule. Under the P3 agreement, Transurban will operate and maintain the express lanes for 75 years. The new toll lanes are among the first in the United States to double as high-occupancy vehicle lanes, bringing new travel choices and guaranteed mobility to the most-congested roadways.

Brian Evans Promoted to Vice President of Operations for E. V. Williams

E. V. Williams is pleased to announce the promotion of Brian Evans to the position of Vice President of Operations.  Brian has been a member of the E. V. Williams team since March of 2000 and has been involved in some of the company’s most complex and demanding projects. Starting as a Project Manager, Brian has continuously grown into positions of greater responsibility.  Since 2011 he has served as Operations Manager where he readily engaged in opportunities to grow his experience.  He has participated in educational opportunities in finance, leadership and presentation skills, as well as developing a working knowledge of construction equipment.  He is adept at pursuing and negotiating reasonable resolutions to complex legal and subcontract issues.

VTCA, in conjunction with VDOT, is offering the Erosion and Sediment Control Contractor Certification Program.  This course is intended to train individuals involved in implementing Erosion and Sediment Control Plans on VDOT projects and rights-of-way.  Participants who complete the course and pass the examination will receive a certificate of completion.  This certificate meets VDOT’s E&S certification requirements.

Lance DeBord, Senior Environmental Scientist - Lance has over 15 years of experience in the environmental field.  His experience includes NEPA documentation, CWA 404 (b) (1) analyses, permitting, and ecosystem restoration. Jonathan Stamper, Senior Ecologist - Jonathan has over 13 years of experience as an environmental professional. He specializes in natural stream design and ecosystem restoration.
