General Assembly Update

January 21, 2014

Yesterday, the Senate voted 35-3 to end Virginia’s $64 annual tax on hybrid vehicles, a key House of Delegates committee did likewise, and Gov. Terry McAuliffe said he’d sign the bill if it reaches his desk. The Senate version of the bill is sponsored by Sen. Steve Newman, R-Lynchburg, although five other senators introduced similar legislation. The tax was originally imposed beginning on July 1, 2013 as part of Governor McDonnell’s landmark transportation bill. The repeal of the tax is estimated to have a $8-10 million a year impact on transportation funding. History of the bill can be found at: SB 127
